About the eclipse

We'll be posting information about the excursion to experience the observation of the total solar eclipse in this section, closer to the eclipse date. Please stay tuned!

The total solar eclipse of 2 July 2019 will be partial in a large part of Argentina, while the path of the shadow will encompass a narrow band that will cross the provinces of San Juan, San Luis, La Rioja, Cordoba, Santa Fe and Buenos Aires. The entire eclipse will be seen at sunset, so the best locations in Argentina will be those to the west, specifically the province of San Juan.

Given that a total solar eclipse is an extremely rare astronomical event, the observation of the phenomenon will have a high cultural and educational value for the Province of San Juan, as well as a significant impact on tourism. Several San Juan towns are in the shadow totality path: North of the city of San Juan, Bella Vista, Rodeo, Las Flores, San Jose de Jachal, Villa Mercedes, El Fiscal, Huaco, Mogna, Villa San Agustin, Las Tumanas, Chucuma, Marayes and Caucete (see the maps below). In the maps, the extreme north and south lines define the zone of totality. The central line indicates the central zone of the eclipse. Click on the maps for close-up versions.

To the north of the city of San Juan, the eclipse can be seen approximately between 16:26, when the partial phase begins, and 18:40, when the Sun sets over the Andes Chain. For this location and depending on how far north of the city one is, totality will only last between 10 and 40 seconds, and will occur at approximately 17:40.

Below are the local times of the most important events for some observation sites. This information was taken from the website maintained by Xavier Jubier (http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/SolarEclipsesGoogleMaps.html).

Start of the total eclipse: 17:40:16
Completion of the total eclipse: 17:40:57
Completion of the partial eclipse: 18:46:17
